When I moved back to Melbourne from Bali, I stepped into the corporate world and got a “normal persons” job working as a marketing manager and social media manager for several companies. However, it wasn't long before my passion for photography took centre stage. With a leap of faith, I decided to quit my jobs and dedicate myself fully to my photography business. After a year of shooting events, portraits, and capturing the essence of entrepreneurs, I realised the immense benefits a dedicated studio space would bring to my work.
The Big Decision: Turning the Garage into a Studio
The decision to convert my garage into a photo studio was both exciting and daunting. Fortunately, I had the unwavering support of my partner and her best friend, who became my cheerleaders and co-builders. Together, we embarked on the transformation, building walls, installing paper backdrops, and creating the foundation of what would become Studio 5A.
With the structural work complete, it was my turn to step in and add the finishing touches. Painting the walls, selecting the right furniture, and investing in professional lighting were the next steps. However, the real challenge was learning how to use the lights effectively.

Mastering the Art of Lighting
Determined to master studio lighting, I enrolled in a lighting course. The sheer volume of information presented in a crowded classroom was overwhelming, and much of it went over my head. Realising I needed more personalised guidance, I hired the course instructor for a private lesson in my studio. This one-on-one session was a game-changer. It demystified the science of lighting, teaching me about settings, light placement, and how to effectively illuminate my subjects.
Growth and Evolution
Since establishing my garage studio, I've witnessed significant growth in my skills as a photographer. Every few months, I experience a palpable "level up" in my work. The dedicated space has allowed me to experiment, learn, and refine my techniques, leading to a deeper understanding of my craft and a more profound connection with my clients.
Transforming my garage into a photography studio was a pivotal decision that has propelled my business forward. The journey, filled with challenges and learning opportunities, has been incredibly rewarding. With the support of loved ones and a commitment to continuous improvement, I've created a space that not only enhances my work but also fuels my passion for capturing authentic, empowered portraits of entrepreneurs and individuals. Here's to many more years of growth, creativity, and beautiful photography at Studio 5A!
